Benefits of Hardwood and Engineered Flooring vs. Traditional Carpeting

January 3, 2019

One of the biggest questions people encounter when choosing the flooring for their homes is to either go with hardwood or carpeting. There are pros and cons to both, however, if you are going to be staying in your house for a while or intend to sell it, hardwood might be the better option. Traditional hardwood usually cannot be installed in every room of your house. The good news is that advances in engineered hardwood can now allow you to have wood flooring in most rooms where traditional hardwood can't be installed. With the popularity of hardwood at an all-time high, now might be the perfect time to switch from carpet to wood flooring.

When it comes to traditional hardwood or engineered wood flooring, the appearance of real wood is a big benefit over the carpet. The neutral look of wood flooring allows for multiple options. When decorating a room with carpeting, you are limited. You can't change the color of your carpet and this color often dictates how you can decorate your room. With wood, even if the color doesn't match the idea of what you want your room to look like, you can either re-sand it and change the color or simply add an area rug.

Both hardwood and engineered flooring are easier to maintain than carpet. A minor spill or accident can greatly damage your carpet, whereas that same spill can easily be whipped up off your hardwood floors. Also, you will never have to worry about hiring someone to clean your carpets or need to rent a carpet cleaning machine to do it yourself. With wood floors, you can simply sweep or vacuum the floor. You can also use a floor cleaner and polish once a month to protect your finish and make your wood shine.

Hardwood flooring also lasts much longer than the carpet, because it can be easily replaced. Unlike carpet, once damaged or worn, you must replace your entire carpet which may not make much financial sense. Unlike carpet, you can sand and refinish your wood multiple times without having to replace it.

Carpeting is known to be a magnet for large quantities of allergens and can potentially cause allergic reactions. With wood flooring, you can maintain and clean your floor much easier than carpet. To care for your floorboards you can sweep or vacuum on a regular basis.

Carpets can also be a breeding ground for germs and bacteria. Water and liquids sink into the carpet and can be trapped between the fibers without being noticed. This trapped water can then allow for bacteria to grow, and for germs to flourish. You don't have this issue with hardwood and it's not difficult to see if your hardwood has water or dirt on it. If it does, you just simply dry it off or use a disinfectant wipe to kill the germs and bacteria.

One of the main reasons why people choose to install a carpet instead of traditional or engineered hardwood is the higher cost of wood flooring. Hardwood floors cost anywhere from $8 to $13 per installed square foot. Carpet is usually between $3 to $6 per installed square foot. The upfront cost of installing traditional or engineered wood floors is higher than the carpet, however, hardwood floors add more value to your home. You will earn more than the difference back between the installation costs of carpet and hardwood when you sell your home.

Most people don't realize how good of an insulator wood flooring makes. Traditional and engineered wood flooring retains heat better than other types of flooring. And if you are missing the softness of carpet, it is easy to place an area rug over your hardwood.

Easier to Rent or Sell

Because of their look, traditional and engineered hardwood flooring are more appealing than carpet to renters and home buyers. In fact, studies show that homes with hardwood flooring sell faster than similar homes with other types of flooring.

Why  Choose Hardwood and Engineered Flooring Over Carpet?

There are numerous reasons to install traditional or engineered hardwood flooring over carpet. The look, health benefits, and ease of maintenance, when compared to carpet, are the main reasons why hardwood is a better option for flooring. Carpet cost less than hardwood flooring, however, the resale value of your home and the increase in speed at which you can sell your home will more than make up for the difference in initial costs.
